09. MAP STORES x HOUSE LUST | Ten Questions

Amanda Cotton of House Lust, is an enthusiast of all things creative. Fashion designer, interior design addict, home renovator, blogger, and lastly but by no means least, she is a new Mummy to the gorgeous Otis.

With over 15 years’ experience in the British fashion industry, Amanda founded website and blog House Lust. While renovating her Victorian home, alongside her husband, her aim was always to inspire other creative creatures with her beautiful interior styling, passion and philosophy.

Since the arrival of her son, Amanda has also begun to feature kids and baby related design concepts on her website.

A connoisseur of all things I love, colour, pattern and texture, I have long admired Amanda's approach to interior design, so I wanted to know more...

What has brought you to where you currently are in your life?
I studied fashion design at university and have spent the past 15 years working in fashion retail as a designer. I turned my hand to interior design 7 years ago when we started renovating our wreck of a victorian Terrace and it's become a bit of a passion of mine. I'm currently on maternity leave with our ten month old baby boy Otis, and having this time off has given me more time to write my blog, post more often and to grow my instagram. I like having another artistic outlet. I find interior design really similar to fashion. Trends come and go but finding the ones that are worth investing (aka your staples) is the key to a successfully designed home which won't date too quickly.

Who or what influences you and why?
I travel a lot with work and I love discovering new shops, hotels, restaurants. I found a great store in South Korea called Style Nanda which inspired the colour scheme for our loft bathroom colour scheme of pink and navy blue.

When you are not working where will we find you?
Hopefully on a beach in Pollença, Majorca or at home on my laptop writing my next blog post.
.
What is your all-time favourite trend?
The dark interiors trend. I know it's not the newest trend, but it's still one of my favourites. I love how rich and luxurious velvet and green house plants look against the dark backdrop.

What inspires you about where you live?
The period of our home. Our house was built in 1901 and we've tried to add back in as many features as possible. The cast iron fireplace in our lounge was added back in, most of the coving, corbels in the hallway and also the dado rail throughout our hallway.

Can you describe your dream home?
An Edwardian Detached house with a huge Hallway. The Edwardians knew what they were doing when it comes to hallways unlike their Victorian Counterparts.

When working on a new project, how do you overcome your fears or challenges?
I enjoy the thrill of the risk, and I don't want to create anything too ordinary. Having platforms like Instagram encourage you to be braver and take those design risks. It's like having a few hundred friends clapping you on from the side lines.
.
What do you want to accomplish in the coming years?
Sadly, I think we'll move house in the next few years. We are bursting at the seams now we have our little boy, and we'll want to move for more outside space, better schools and more buggy friendly indoor space.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
I recently collaborated with the Florence Broadhurst archive which was a career highlight. Other brands I'd love to work with are House of Hackney, Liberty and Gucci. Gucci's maximalist styling in their clothing and homeware is currently hitting all the right buttons for me.

What would be one piece of advice you would give your younger self?
Be brave, enjoy your much skinnier body and don't sweat the small stuff. If it's not worth worrying about in 10 years time, it probably isn't worth worrying about at all.
